Lydon Presents at CNU New England Conference on Sustainable Urbanism.
Date: 4/3/2009

Mike Lydon, Principal of The Street Plans Collaborative, presents LOS or BS at the Congress for New Urbanism New England chapter's Sustainable Urbanism Conference. The lecture, entitled LOS or BS? examines how functional classification and Level of Service (LOS) metrics have created four variants of auto-dependency: cul-de sac, collector, arterial and highway. Given the deleterious effects of such a system, Lydon will ask why t the counter-disciplines of bicycle and pedestrian planning are also making use of the same planning methods? Lydon will speak broadly about the ills of conventional traffic engineering practice, while specifically discussing the negative effects of such a system as applied to bikeway facilities. Concluding the discussion will be a review of the transect-based Bicycle SmartCode Module and the promises it holds for finding a more logical solution to improving bicycle conditions—from rural to urban.
